The interview between BEAM and Georgetown Pediatric Dentistry
We interview Janna Bona of Georgetown Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, a pediatric dental and orthodontic clinic in Georgetown, Texas, about ways her clinic uses BEAM interactive playgrounds to enhance their patients’ experience.
BEAM: Can you tell a bit about Georgetown Pediatric Dentistry?
Janna: Georgetown Pediatric Dentistry is a dental and orthodontic office. We’ve been open since 2008. We got our first BEAM in late 2009.
BEAM: What was the business need to get it?
J: The doctors thought it would be a good way to entertain the kids. Originally here at Georgetown Pediatric, we had it installed back in the clinic where we see patients. We have an open concept floor plan with our dental chairs, and we’ll often see siblings: two, three, four kids from one family. So their appointment time is longer, and they can get stir-crazy waiting for their cleanings and x-rays and exams. So we got the BEAM interactive playgrounds installed and projected on the wall so that kids could entertain themselves during their downtime. When we moved to our new facility, which is much larger, we installed televisions and iPads in the clinic waiting room space for the same purpose, to keep them entertained. But we actually built a room dedicated just to our BEAM in the [clinic waiting room] lobby, where it’s projected onto the floor for the kids to play with while they’re waiting for their appointment.
BEAM: What has the reception been like from the patients and parents?
Janna: Just terrific. It’s a novelty, and kids aren’t accustomed to seeing it anywhere else, so they’re ecstatic. The parents love it, too, and they always joke, like, “we need one of these at home to tire our kids out.” Most of the kids will beg their parents to play the game, so they’ll actually stay after their appointments to play some more.
BEAM: And what have effects been on their business?
Janna: It’s value-added. The cooler and newer the experience you offer to your patients, the more new patients you can bring in. It’s part of the wow factor. People mention it in reviews on Yelp and Google and Facebook, which is a great boost to Georgetown Pediatrics. It’s a piece of the whole puzzle. It helps us project the image of the clinic as fun, high-tech and innovative.
It helps patients come in for their six month recalls because the kids are excited to come back. Some parents have said to us “the kids act like going to the dentist is Christmas morning. They get so excited to come to see you guys!” If the kids are excited to come to see us, then the parents don’t have to drag them kicking and screaming.
BEAM: What’s maintenance been like?
Janna: We haven’t had to do anything with it since we’ve moved into this facility.
